AbstractAn anthology of 30 short poetry and prose selections by and about American Indians tries to show what it is like to be an Indian in today's world. In addition to material by Hap Gilliland, Arthur Chapman, Mayme E. Finley, Jack Fiddler, and excerpts from Christopher Columbus' account to Ferdinand and Isabella, items are included by: Duke Redbird and Bazil Katasse (Blackfeet); Chief Crazy Horse and Benjamin Black Elk (Oglala Sioux); Sitting Bull, Chief Crowfoot, Elizabeth Goss, and Midji Stephenson (Sioux); Chief Dan George (Salish); Chief Joseph (Nez Perce); Diane Bellrose and Dora Nataway (Indian elementary school children from Manitoba); Gordon Moore (Cree); a delegation of Iroquois leaders of over 200 years ago; and the Grand Council Fire of American Indians (1927). Some subjects covered are education, civilization, freedom, progress, life, marriage, and Indian pride and history, plus a science fiction fable about life in America after an invasion by the Chinese. A nine-page study commentary provides background information on the selections and their authors, as well as points to consider about selections. Photographs of Indian people and places from North and South America are included. (MH)
