| Abstract | The need for the State of Illinois to create and implement a comprehensive plan for economic development has never been greater. The revitalization of the economy of the state can only be achieved through the implementation of a series of strategies designed to facilitate the restructuring of the economy to accommodate a 50 percent change of the job base every 5 years. Communities that have effectively organized economic deve1opment programs are in a better position to maximize the effectiveness of the transition from an industrially oriented to an informationally oriented society. Research conducted at Northern Illinois University shows the potential role that education can play in the economic development scenario. Based on this research, the best strategy apparently would be a coordinated plan made up of four regional economic development centers located in Chicago, Northern Illinois, Central Illinois, and Southern Illinois. As proposed, these regional economic development models would provide the maximum collaboration of commerce, industry, labor, education, and government and would build upon one of the major strengths of the state--its system of higher education. The facilitating and coordinating process model proposed would coordinate and maximize the use of scarce resources and facilitate communication among existing private and public agencies.
