Abstract | This paper explores languages for communicating precise ideas within limited domains, which include mathematical notation and general purpose and high level computer programming languages. Low-level properties of such natural artificial languages are discussed, with emphasis on those in which names are chosen for concepts and symbols are chosen for names. Properties of these linguistically mediated artificial languages specifically examined include choosing mnemonic symbols for names and suggestive names for concepts, and using both internally and externally consistent syntax. An example of artificial language use for writing mathematical theorem in mathematical notation is given. A model of processing linguistically-mediated artificial language is outlined, and results from three experiments in support of the model--MENUMIX--are presented. The applied implications of the studies for the design of menu-based user interface to computer programs are discussed, and conclusions are offered about future possibilities for artificial language study.
