AbstractResearch points to numerous examples of the successes that occur when learning disabled adults are rehabilitated. For example, a study of learning disabled adults who were clients of the Arizona Division of Vocational Rehabilitation between 1975 and 1981 revealed that 64 percent of the clients had found work and remained working for two months or more. Included among the many difficulties that learning disabled adults face on the job are the following: deficient academic skills, problems learning a sequence of tasks, problems in managing time and in being on time, inefficiency and errors, clumsiness, and social skills problems. Learning disabled adults can overcome these problems. Many of them, however, need help, and many strategies are available to the vocational rehabilitation counselor for use in helping learning disabled adults. Sometimes knowing about the disability helps the rehabilitation counselor guide clients toward a job in their area of strength. Sometimes a job can be found in which the client does so well that the employer makes accommodations in order to keep a high producer on the job. Other strategies that are useful in rehabilitating learning disabled adults include vocational evaluation, remediation of specific disabilities, social skills instruction, and psychotherapy.
