AbstractDeveloped through close coordination between contractors, construction workers, and vocational educators, this instructor's manual is designed to help heavy equipment instructors present materials in a systematic format. The instructional materials in the manual are written in terms of student performance, using measurable behavioral objectives. Criterion-referenced evaluation instruments provide for a uniform measurement of student progress. The manual contains four sections, organized into 14 units, each consisting of eight components: performance objectives, suggested activities for the teachers, information sheets, assignment sheets, job sheets, transparency masters, tests, and answers to tests and assignment sheets. Units of instruction are designed for use in more than one lesson or class period. The first section introduces the course, providing information on the free enterprise system, economics of free enterprise, the heavy equipment industry, and safety and first aid. The second section covers mathematics needed for heavy equipment operators, while related information on soil, equipment, rigging, and oxyacetylene cutting are discussed in the third section. The final section covers principles of engine operation, including gasoline and diesel engines, the drive train, and preventive maintenance. Materials are illustrated with drawings and photographs.
