| Abstract | The new elementary education program for prospective teachers at the State University of New York at Oswego focuses on the structure of human learning. The program has three tracks for students to choose from, each consisting of: (1) the foundations semester; (2) the unit; and (3) field experience. In the foundations semester, students work on finding the structure underlying each subject and then on using those structures for curriculum purposes. During the unit semesters, time is spent analyzing already existing curriculum units to see how closely they agree with the structure inherent in the field and in the learner. It is not, however, until the field experience that the theoretic is finally integrated with the practical for the student. Students are in the classrooms from the beginning of their education classes, first observing, then assisting and finally teaching. Another feature which characterizes the program is the fact that there is not only continuity within the program itself but also between the program and the liberal arts education offered by the college.
