| Abstract | This case study of academic computing is one of a series focusing on computers as everyday learning and teaching tools which is addressed to administrators, teachers, staff, and students who wish to plan or improve the uses of computers at their own institutions. Following a brief description of the purpose and selection of cases for the overall study, the report profiles academic computing at Rutgers University, the state university of New Jersey, which has 46,000 students enrolled on seven campuses at New Brunswick, Piscataway, Newark, and Camden. The computing history of Rutgers is summarized, covering three decades of computer usage. The report describes the Center for Computer and Information Services (CCIS), which manages facilities and support for academic computing, and student access to computing facilities, including the CCIS, individual academic departments, and computing facilities provided by the New Jersey Educational Computer Network. Additional sections address costs and budgeting, the spectrum of computer applications at Rutgers, student accomplishments, computer literacy, computer science programs, outreach programs (sharing of software, expertise, and courses), plans and goals, and lessons learned.
