| Abstract | A study was conducted to determine if changes in a student's writing and speaking skills over the period of a semester could be measured reliably and to measure what changes, if any, occur in these skills over this period. A pretest-posttest design employing the speech and writing portions of ACT's College Outcome Measures Project was used to gather data. Subjects were 88 college students in six sections of a basic rhetoric course. Analysis of test results indicated that these changes could indeed be measured. Specifically, the greatest gains in skills occurred for the relatively weakest subgroups of subjects in both writing and speaking. On the other hand, except in one case, higher level subgroups did not improve their skills. Most important, however, nearly all of the students reached a standard of proficiency acceptable for college level writing and speaking. (JL) |
