Abstract	A study analyzed past and present United States initiatives for promoting equal employment opportunity and wage equality for women. It was determined that, during the past 20 years, the United States Government has established the legal procedures to combat inequities in educational opportunities and employment-related practices. While these procedures have effected some improvements, the problems of occupational segregation and its resultant lower earnings for women persist. Other issues affecting the full utilization of women in the work force include protective labor legislation, inequities in education, lack of adequate child care, lack of adequate alternative work patterns, the scope of unemployment, involuntary part-time employment, and limited unemployment assistance. Despite outreach efforts to groups with special needs, such as migrant and seasonal farmworkers and minority women, members of these groups continue to lag behind their white counterparts in most socioeconomic areas. Analysis of the effectiveness of equal opportunity initiatives reveals that, for the future, equality for women in the workplace will depend on continued reduction of occupational segregation of women.
