Abstract | The Structure of Intellect (SOI) learning abilities test and curriculum emphasize teaching that promotes individualized learning and divergent thinking and recognize special problems in identifying underachievers, minority gifted students, and differing abilities in boys and girls. The model addresses these variations by taking the view that cognitive growth can be directly and systematically fostered. Guilford's model of intellect, composed of operations, content, and products, is adapted to the SOI model which is a factor analytic approach defining a proliferation of behaviors in 17 subtests. More information about more abilities is more finely drawn. Templates are used to categorize major IQ tests into SOI categories; correlation studies are used to investigate SOI validity. Foundational abilities and enabling skills in reading; and abilities in arithmetic, mathematics, writing readiness, and creativity are measured. The test's particular value is as a "more information" source in making decisions where prior information is incomplete, and SOI provides profiles of children who have been difficult to assess. The SOI test and curriculum model is a remediation system identifying strengths as tools for improving disabling areas. SOI is largely associated with gifted education but can positively affect the general classroom. SOI planning, training, and implementation must consider start-up time, staffing, and cost factor alternatives. (CM) |
