AbstractThe Comprehensive School Mathematics Program (CSMP) is a program of CEMREL, Inc., one of the national educational laboratories, and was funded by the National Institute of Education (NIE). Its major purpose is the development of curriculum materials for kindergarten through grade 6. CSMP was developed as a curriculum for ordinary classroom use, but several school districts have begun to use the materials for elementary school students identified as well above average in ability. Three sites during the 1980-1981 school year carried out some kind of testing program to evaluate student outcomes, and these are the subject of this document. All the sites are located in large towns within 40 miles of relatively large cities in the Midwest. The Mathematics Applied to Novel Situations (MANS) test was used in administration. Results indicated a very strong CSMP advantage in probability, a strong advantage in estimation and other number systems, and a relatively weak advantage in computation, number patterns and relationships, and word problems.
