Abstract	The Comprehensive School Mathematics Program (CSMP) is a program of CEMREL, Inc., one of the national educational laboratories, and was funded by the National Institute of Education (NIE). Its primary purpose is the development of curriculum materials for kindergarten through grade 6. This study compared CSMP and non-CSMP second-grade students' performance at two sites using a streamlined revision of the Mathematics Applied to Novel Situations (MANS) test. Twelve CSMP and nine non-CSMP classes were tested. Results showed that CSMP classes scored significantly higher at the .05 level on 7 of 13 scales. The best performances by program pupils was on measurements dealing with number relationships, mental arithmetic, and number fluency. There was no difference between CSMP and non-CSMP groups in computation scores. The findings are seen as corroborating more extensive prior testing results, except that two scales showed larger CSMP advantages. It is felt the results are also noteworthy because the simplification of the testing procedures should make them easier for districts to use. (MP)
