AbstractAcademic scholarships for college students are identified, including all the major merit programs--federal, state, private, and collegiate. Detailed information on 80,000 collegiate academic awards are presented by state and 845 schools as follows: name of the program, number of awards, value range of the award, class standing and grade point average requirements; scores needed on the Scholastic Aptitude Test and/or the American College Testing Program test; other award criteria (e.g., interview or recommendations required); whether financial need is considered in setting the amount of the award; majors students may select; restrictions (e.g., state residents, U.S. citizens); whether awards are renewable; and details of the application process. Three large federal programs for the academically talented are Harry S. Truman Scholarships, Reserve Office Training Corps (ROTC) programs, and military academy awards. States that provide merit-based awards for either state institutions or any accredited school are identified, along with principal corporate sponsors of merit scholarships for employee children, and principal private college sponsors of merit scholarships. Seven additional private sponsors are identified, and sources of further information are also recommended. Finally, some intellectual and financial benefits of collegiate honors programs are outlined. (SW)
