| Abstract | Learning activities on the topic of aging which were developed and field tested by K-6 teachers in the public schools of Acton, Massachusetts, are provided. They are designed to overcome many of the myths that children hold about aging and to help them develop a more realistic and positive view of their own future as people who will grow old. The activities, which can be used in many subject areas including language arts and social studies, are grouped into units, but can also be used individually. The information provided for each unit includes an overview, list of materials needed, teaching time, handouts, and follow-up discussion questions. Some examples of the kinds of activities included follow. Students look at pre-selected photographs from books or magazines depicting people of different ages and identify those physical characteristics that are more related to age. Another activity helps students expand their understanding of aging to include different points of view by having them request in writing information from private and government agencies. Specific instructions to help students use a business letter form are provided. A list of agencies and organizations is also included. Other activities involve students in analyzing poetry, conducting interviews, creating word search puzzles, listening to classroom speakers, reading and interpreting graphs for trends and implications, and discussing the lyrics and sounds. The appendices contain a reading list on intergenerational themes and a glossary on aging. (RM) |
