| Abstract | With the development of educational drama and the popularization of differing drama theorists, an uneasiness has developed in teachers' minds concerning the relationship between drama and theatre. This uneasiness is manifested by the polarization of opinion as to whether the focus of drama should be an orientation towards process or product. It should be noted that the process of the symbolic creation of meaning by the child through dramatic play is linked with the product of its expression. Neither the one nor the other assumes a dominant position in the role relationship and the natural building of understanding. It is the child's natural ability to spontaneously adopt roles and learn through dramatic activity that forms the basis of drama-in-education curricula. The creation of meaning and change in understanding that may occur through dramatic activity will be directly affected by the personal experiences and knowledge brought to the activity by the child, actor, and audience. The use of an audience in drama-in-education deepens and broadens the learning focus. It is also important to stress that there are categories of drama that offer important, but general, insights into the student's development through drama. To fully exploit the learning potential of drama, teachers must also consider theatre. As students progress in drama, they feel an increasingly earnest desire to refine personal meaning and to shape it through the constraints of the art form. The private nature of children's dramatic activity changes to acknowledge the public, social world of others. It is in this social context that the creative, communicative function of theatre is needed as a further extension of the learning experience. (HOD) |
