Abstract | To support the position that radio has significant instructional potential for the improvement of language arts skills--especially reading--in developing nations, this paper discusses the use of radio in relation to other aspects of educational development in those countries. The first section of the paper discusses the role of language in educational development (literacy, vernacular languages, international languages, language policy, and language and economic expectations). The second section reviews the use of radio in educational development (the advantages of radio, radio in education, radio and language instruction, and radio and unqualified language teachers). The third section summarizes current theoretical descriptions of the reading process and their congruence with the use of radio (psycholinguistics and reading, reading in a second language, language and language arts instruction, and radio and reading). The last section suggests ways in which radio's potential can be realized in a language arts reading program. (HOD) |
