| Abstract | As part of a project investigating how communication within hospital systems differs from communication in other types of organizations, the employees of a 40-bed hospital were surveyed for their attitudes on perceived uncertainty, internal patterns of communication in the hospital, and worker satisfaction. Variables that were studied included message, channel, and source uncertainty; demographic variables; role description variables; and worker satisfaction. The results of the study revealed that, (1) similar to other organizations, satisfaction was significantly correlated with task, human, and maintenance message uncertainty. Human uncertainty accounted for the largest amount of the variance in satisfaction, nearly 17%. (2) The hospital used in the case study was different from the other organizations analyzed in that there appeared to be problems involving written channels and immediate supervisors. (3) Sex was the only demographic variable that correlated with satisfaction, and none of the role descriptions appeared to play a significant part in explaining satisfaction.
