| Abstract | A study examined the views of business and industry on the Florida vocational and technical education system. Representatives from 284 Florida firms and 44 supervisors completed interviews based on two project-developed questionnaires. Sought in the questionnaires were employer perceptions concerning the following areas: awareness of vocational and technical programs available in given geographical areas, contact with the programs, ratings of the programs, job performance of completers of vocational programs, degree of cooperation between business and industry and the vocational education system, and suggestions for improving cooperation. While most employers rated Florida's vocational education system as good or excellent, the extent of contact between persons responsible for hiring and the local vocational education system is less than might be expected. Employer perceptions of the state's vocational system also varied according to geographical area and type of industry with those in the southwest and northwest areas of the state and those in manufacturing and service industries having the most favorable impressions of the system. The most popular suggestions for improving vocational education was to increase employer impact and the least popular suggestion was to reduce or eliminate programs. (MN) |
