AbstractThe document contains a review of the literature on screening for learning disabilities; a report of a Macomb, Illinois, study testing the Myklebust Learning Quotient method of identifying learning disabilities; and guidelines for learning disability eligibility screening in the Macomb schools. In the introduction, characteristics of the learning disabled child are considered, and the Myklebust formula, which looks at the ratio of actual achievement level to expected achievement level, is explained. Studies evaluating the formula are noted. The Macomb study used the formula with 163 children previously diagnosed as learning disabled. Ss in grades 1 through 12 were given the Kuhlman-Anderson test (to generate mental age), the Peabody Individual Achievement Test, and the Science Research Associates Achievement Series. Wechsler Intelligence Scale scores were also used when available to calculate learning quotient according to the Myklebust formula. Results indicated that use of the formula would decrease the number of children labeled learning disabled from 6% of the total school population to 4%. Modifications of the formula when applied to grades 1 and 2 and to high school aged students are proposed. The third section presents the screening steps to be used in applying the eligibility formula in the Macomb schools with separate guidelines for grades 1 and 2, 3 and 8, and high school. Also provided are forms for recording results of eligibility screening. Appended are statistical tables detailing results of the study. (DB)
