Abstract | A formative evaluation wae made of immersion weekends sponsored by the French center to determine how improvements in the role of monitors can enhance the oral production of students. Two weekends were observed and some in-service training with evaluator and monitors was held between the weekends. Three instruments were used to categorize and systematize the observations: (1) a chart for observing non-verbal action, (2) a chart for evaluating question techniques, and (3) classification of corrections. Observation was done within the following framework: (1) how monitors fostered good rapport with students, (2) the nature of the correcting process, and (3) the level of skill in questioning techniques. A description of both weekends is included as well as an analysis of the data on the monitors. Also included is an outline of the intervention in-service session. Appendices provide the original proposal to the government for the weekends, observation collection charts, a resume of monitors' questionnaires, and the intervention in-service materials. (AMH) |
