Abstract | Survey data were collected for the purposes of describing and comparing various forms of day care provision for preschool children within Danish municipalities with different day care provision and different degrees of urbanization. Information concerning the family background of subjects, parental assessment of different aspects of day care and family wishes for a change of the type of care used also was gathered. Questionnaires were returned by the parents of 3,754 children. In selecting the children, a distinction was made between two age groups in accordance with the traditional division of public provision of creches and day nurseries. Thus, the survey covers two age groups: 4-month through 2-year-olds and 3- through 5-year-olds. In the case of the younger age group, the survey represents 51% of all Danish municipalities, corresponding to 70% of all 0- through 2-year-olds; for the 3- through 5-year-olds, the survey represents 56% of the municipalities, corresponding to 66% of all 3- through 5-year-olds. Main results are discussed in terms of (1) the families' attachment to the labor market, (2) how the young children are cared for, (3) who uses public day care, (4) parents' wishes for public day care, (5) parents' satisfaction with the day care used, and (6) parents' satisfaction with their employment situation.
