Abstract | This book, designed to teach American English sounds and spellings to beginning and intermediate level English as a second language (ESL) students, provides practice with all the meaningful sounds of a "standard" American dialect that will be understood nearly everywhere in the English speaking world. It contains an introductory lesson and twenty sequential lessons. The introductory lesson presents the letter names, consonant and vowel sounds, voiced and voiceless sounds, and regular and irregular spellings. The twenty sequential lessons present the sounds, usually three per lesson, practice exercises in pronunciation and spelling, and quizzes. Some lessons include explanations and exercises on stress, intonation, rhythm, and sentence contours. (AMH) |
