AbstractBased on a survey of 710 randomly selected persons from the Pinellas County (St. Petersburg area), Florida, Cooperative Extension mailing list, 54 of 566 respondents (9.5 percent) were willing to volunteer part of their time to assist the local Extension education program. Most respondents indicated home economics and horticulture as the main fields of interest for their volunteer work. They would make available a total of 105 hours of volunteer time per week to the Pinellas County Cooperative Extension Service. A list of volunteers has been established from the survey, and each program area will be furnished with the names and addresses of the persons identified as volunteers for that field of interest. Based on the sample response of 9.5 percent, it was projected that volunteers could be increased to approximately 540 and an additional 1,470 volunteer hours per week could be added if the entire mailing list was contacted. The impact of such a volunteer force on the Extension audience of Pinellas County is difficult to predict; however, the success of the volunteer program in Cooperative Extension will be measured by counting the increase in clientele contact, and comparing it to previous years' records.
