Abstract | This one year training program consisted of four graduate courses aimed at developing an awareness and understanding of the ethnic heritage of Asian Americans in selected elementary school teachers. It was designed to equip classroom teachers with information, strategies, and materials needed to help their students become more ethnically aware, and consequently, more sensitive to cultural differences. The courses were about: (1) acculturation through education; (2) education of the culturally different learner; (3) children from culturally different backgrounds; and (4) curricular needs of culturally different students. A complete outline of each course is presented in this report. In evaluating the results of the training program, it was found that the participants' attitudes toward Asian American ethnic groups were positively improved. (JD) |
