Abstract	Chapter 2 of a book on school law, this chapter summarizes 1979 court cases concerning school employees. The author deals with cases in the areas of employment discrimination, dismissal and discipline of employees, tenure, substantive constitutional rights of employees, procedural due process for employee dismissal, immunity and liability under the Civil Rights Act of 1871, remedies for improper action, salary disputes, leaves of absence, and retirement. It is noted that in 1979, school employees in record numbers brought civil rights actions alleging violation of constitutional rights as well as of civil rights laws. In state cases, the author notes that the impact of declining enrollments and reduced revenues was apparent as reduction-in-force disputes grew in number. In certain decisions, he traced two trends: the use of employee suspension as an alternative to dismissal, and the authorization and utilization of hearing officers and panels to consider charges against employees.
