| Abstract | This paper provides an overview of the cognitive process analysis of tasks used to measure aptitude and intelligence. As an illustration of this approach, performance on inductive reasoning tasks such as series extrapolation and analogy problems is considered in terms of the factors that contribute to item difficulty and individual differences in measured aptitude. The analysis emphasizes the development of information processing models that specify content and process factors that determine the speed and accuracy of task performance. Theoretical and empirical efforts lead to the postulation of rule complexity and representational variability as two general sources of difficulty in inductive reasoning tasks. These two factors provide a basis for the analysis of individual differences in aptitude test performance and also for instructional experimentation designed to influence reasoning skill. In general, the paper illustrates the implications of applying theories of cognition to the field of psychometrics. (Author) |
