AbstractLicensure laws in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania were reviewed to determine the extent to which the licensing boards in this region were requiring accreditation in professional licensing qualifications. The following professions were considered: certified public accountant, dental hygienist, pharmacist, physical therapist, and psychologist. For each of the five professions, information is provided on typical job responsibilities, the formal name of the licensing board for each state, the legal requirement as stipulated in the state statute detailing the minimum postsecondary education required to be eligible to take the licensing examination, and the effective date for this legislation. This date applies to the most recent change for any of the candicacy requirements including age, resident status, experience, and others. In addition, a table is presented that tabulates by profession and by state: (1) the presence or absence of wording in statute specifying required postsecondary education in an accredited institution or program; (2) the actual practices of licensing boards requiring an accredited education; and (3) miscellaneous comments. It was found that in none of the five states were professions requiring licensure actually coordinated by one central state office or agency, and the states have comparable minimal education requirements for licensing for the five professions. For each of the five states, a list of all occupations and the appropriate citation within the state regulations is presented. (SW)
