| Abstract | This essay on marriage and family therapy begins with background information on the institutions of marriage and the family, including religious and social forces, and the effects of the industrial revolution on American society. The impact of the two world wars on the social, political, economic, and psychological climate of the United States is examined. Changes in the traditional roles of men and women and the resultant tensions upon family life are explored. A discussion of the breakup of the extended family, the birth of the nuclear family, and types of marriage and family problems is followed by a presentation of early therapeutic efforts to assist troubled marriages and to develop modern approaches to therapy. The theoretical orientations of several modern marriage therapists are summarized along with speculations on the future of marriage and family counseling. In conclusion, personal critiques and observations of marriage and family therapy are presented. (Author/NRB) |
