AbstractThe Zuckerman Affect Adjective Check List (AACL) is used to measure trait anxiety and situation-specific trait anxiety relating to peer interaction, vocational aspiration, and the learning of English, mathematics, science and social studies. The subjects were 262 grade 10 students attending an Australian metropolitan high school. Additional self-report instruments including the Profile of Real/Ideal Scholastic Motivation, the Vocational Preference Inventory, and a friendship questionnaire were utilized in order to identify some of the correlates of anxiety. A correlation analysis was performed on all variables for the whole sample, as well as for males and females separately. Vocational and mathematics related anxiety was highest, whereas trait and peer anxiety was lowest. Females were significantly less anxious than males in peer and trait anxiety, but were significantly more anxious in science anxiety. Anxiety in the academic area increased as the mathematical content of the subject increased. Vocational anxiety was high reflecting the uncertainty about unemployment. Females reflected a concern for pleasing significant others, whereas males tended to be more concerned about academic matters. No significant correlations were found between variables with peer anxiety for either sex in any of the friendship groupings. (RL)
