AbstractThis report presents the results of a systematic survey of the field of Japanese studies in the United States conducted during a period of eighteen months prior to 1970. The objectives of the report were: (1) to provide a fuller understanding of the contours of the field; (2) to offer documentation on the identity of scholars at work in the field; and (3) to clarify the importance of Japanese studies for the United States. The report is based on two primary sources of data. The first source was a series of nine disciplinary survey conferences of Japanese specialists from American universities and related institutions; the second source was a series of questionnaires. The substance of the report covers the following topics: (1) the case for Japanese studies; (2) the development of Japanese studies in the United States from 1934 to 1969 and a future projection; and (3) the state of Japanese studies today with regard to persons, institutions, students, the problem of language training, research and publications, libraries, and communication with Japanese scholars. The concluding section presents conclusions and recommendations of the study. (AMH)
