AbstractA study was designed to determine the particular effects of humorous illustrations on a textbook's teaching effectiveness, appeal, persuasibility, and potential to motivate. Experimental text materials were prepared in two levels of difficulty and six cartoons were drawn to illustrate different educational points that were made in the materials. The two versions of the text and the cartoons were arranged to effect a factorial variation in level of difficulty (easy, difficult) and amount of humor (none, moderate, extensive). One-hundred eighty college students read one of the six versions of the material and evaluated it on a number of dimensions. They were then given a test over the factual content of the material, with one-half of the questions relating directly to the portion of the content illustrated by the cartoons and the remaining questions testing recall of material unrelated to the cartoons. The results revealed that humorous illustrations had (1) no effect on information acquisition and on motivation, (2) positive effects on appeal, and (3) negative effects on persuasibility. (FL)
