AbstractMembers of the National Council of College Publications Advisers were surveyed to determine the predominant management style within which the advisers worked. The choices of management style were restrictive-Theory X and permissive-Theory Y. Respondents were encouraged to give general examples, cite specific incidents, and include clippings from their publications to support their responses. The results agreed with the pretest observation that an overwhelming majority of the advisers would identify themselves with the permissive management styles of Theory Y. The overall percentages of the 74 respondents were 87.83% Theory Y, 1.53% Theory X, and 10.64% who did not directly or by example indicate either Theory X or Theory Y. It was found through the study that there was adviser operational strength in providing an academically defensible publication, in providing a channel of understanding between the student publication staff and others, and in having attained tenure or at least being placed on a track for tenure. (The comments supplied by the responding advisers are discussed, and five student editorials are appended.) (RL)
