AbstractA project was conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of competency-based, individualized instruction as a teaching technique in vocational welding programs for students with varying backgrounds, abilities, and special needs. Five Missouri area vocational schools participated in the project by field testing and evaluating welding instructional modules developed by the state media center and teacher inservice presentations developed during this project. Two slide-tape presentations were produced, one to explain competency-based instruction and one to provide implementation procedures for teaching in a competency-based system. Three video-tape programs were developed to show techniques for teaching learning disabled, educationally disadvantaged, and physically handicapped students in welding. Major project findings included (1) the teacher inservice presentations developed were found to be acceptable and ready for dissemination and (2) positive results were obtained from the competency-based, individualized instructional method utilizing the welding modules. (Appendixes, amounting to over three-fourths of the report, include scripts to the media presentations, summary of student evaluations of the learning modules, forms used in the project, and advisory committee agendas and notes.)
