| Abstract | This study guide/bibliography is intended to help the English language reader find materials for the study of Asian theatre. Containing 1,348 entries, the guide is the most extensive bibliography published to date. The guide is organized by geographical area: an initial chapter on Asia is followed by chapters on each of 16 countries: Burma, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Malaysia and Singapore, Nepal, Pakistan and Bangladesh, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Tibet, and Vietnam. Each chapter opens with a brief introduction discussing the important theatre genres of the area, the state of English-language scholarship and the availability of materials in the United States, journals that carry articles on theatre, and suggestions for background reading. Bibliographic entries follow and are organized into four categories: (1) history, theory, and practice, including narrative accounts of drama and theatre; (2) English-language translations of plays, whether in collections, in journals, or individually issued; (3) audiovisual materials available in the United States; and (4) reference works such as other bibliographies, museum collections, play listings, and book and record dealers.
