| Abstract | The effect of adjunct aids on comprehension of expository text by seventh grade poor readers was investigated. The adjunct aids were activities designed to invite readers to make inferences required in order to understand the text, a 1,300-word passage on the Kalahari Desert. Two treatment groups received activities with graphic locational aids, one simultaneously with the reading and one after an initial reading of text. Two treatment groups received the same activities without graphic aids, one simultaneously with the reading and one after an initial reading of text. Results of comprehension tests indicated that the inference making activities were effective at increasing the subjects' comprehension. Groups who read the activities after reading the text outperformed the groups who received activities and text simultaneously. Groups who received graphic locational aids did not outperform the other treatment groups. (Author/MKM) |
