AbstractThe aim of this booklet is to stimulate informed discussion about the development of open-plan primary schools in Scotland. Background information is provided that focuses on the development of the design and construction of an early (1969) open-plan facility -- the Kirkhill Primary School in Broxburn. How education authorities learned from their implementation of open-plan designs is indicated in discussions of Milltimber School in Aberdeenshire and other open-plan schools. Descriptions of three primary schools that vary in their design and internal organization (the Dean Park School in Balerno, Milltimber in Aberdeenshire, and Trinity in Hawick) are provided. Milltimber and Dean Park are both modern open-plan primary schools that were built to purpose. Trinity School, built in 1934, is a structure that now has a redesigned and radically altered interior. Teachers' accounts of their experiences in the buildings are included in the discussion. The author emphasizes that the booklet is not intended to be a formal research report. (Author/RH)
