AbstractThe purpose of this parent education project was to strengthen the Israeli family as an educational unit, to increase its ability and knowledge in the field of education, and to broaden the range of responsibility and influence of the family over its young children. The first stage of this project was devoted to problems of early childhood. A series of 13 television programs, consisting of family dramas and discussions of the dramatized materials, was broadcast during prime time on Israeli television. After each program, approximately 1000 parent-discussion groups met to explore topics related to the TV shows. Discussions were guided by a specially recruited and trained team of professionals. Followup research was conducted among the general population, under-privileged parents, group leaders and leaders' supervisors, professionals in education, health and welfare institutions, and in parent-group discussion meetings. Findings concerning patterns in the behavior, attitudes and needs of parents, the broadcasts, and the parent discussion groups are given. Practical implications of the findings are discussed.
