Abstract | Data on earned degrees conferred from institutions of higher education by race, ethnicity, and sex for the academic year 1976-1977 are recorded in this two volume report. The report is divided in the following four sections: Section (1) Degrees Conferred by Institution; Section (2) Degrees Conferred for Major Field by Institution; Section (3) Degrees Conferred in Public Institutions; and Section (4) Degrees Conferred in Private Institutions. Each section contains several tables listing statistical information. Degrees covered within each section include bachelor's, master's, doctoral, first-professional degrees, and associate degrees and other awards based on less than four years of work beyond high school. Data for the report were collected through the survey "Degrees and Other Formal Awards Conferred Between July 1, 1976, and June 30, 1977" which is part of the Higher Education General Information Survey (HEGIS XI) conducted by the National Center for Educational Statistics. All institutions receiving federal financial assistance in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and outlying areas of the United States were surveyed for this study. Racial, ethnic, and sex enrollment data were included by the Office for Civil Rights under authorization of Section 80.6(b) of the regulations implementing Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and similiar provisions implementing Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. Requirements for reporting and definitions of terms are found in the Instruction Sheets for the survey instrument in Appendix A. Technical notes are covered in Appendix B. (Author/LC) |
