| Abstract | An investigation conducted at Suffolk University concerning what is needed in a placement department is described. An in-depth literature search, comparison of internal and external policy about placement, and administration of a questionnaire to over 90 percent of the faculty of the College of Business Administration was undertaken. It was found that the traditional role of placing the graduate is still of primary importance but that this role is dramatically expanding. Research indicated that "career counseling and placement" is the favored term used by the placement office. It was also discovered that many placement directors are reporting to someone in the student personnel area rather than to a college administrator. Involvement of the placement office with courses, information systems, outreach efforts, and followup has frequently been accomplished by seeking help from faculty, alumni, students, and other departments rather than through employment of additional placement personnel. The investigation resulted in the development of a viable, modernistic placement policy for the college. Appended are the university's initial placement policy, information on placement policy statements at other institutions, a sample questionnaire, and the new current planning and placement policy.
