AbstractThis booklet provides a chronology of public education in Alabama from 1799 to 1979. Objectives are to provide an abbreviated educational history to interested Alabamans and citizens of other states and to inspire researchers to investigate local school systems and other educational topics throughout Alabama. The document is presented in three major sections. Section I, "In the Beginning, 1799-1900," explains how and when early Alabama schools were established, introduces important early educators, describes early attempts to organize a state association of teachers, and traces the establishment of separate educational institutions for blacks and whites. Section II, "Schools of Yesterday, 1901-1942," focuses on expansion of public education, setting of standards for teachers' certificates, and the beginning of educational legislation affecting teachers' welfare, local school taxes, and compulsory attendance. The final section, "Schools of Today, 1943-1979," traces recent developments including expansion of higher education and professional schools (particularly schools of medicine and dentistry), authorization of vocational high schools, appropriation of funds for handicapped students, integration of state supported schools under federal court direction, and increase of programs for functionally illiterate adults. The chronology is illustrated with line drawings, photographs, and maps. (DB)
