Abstract | This document provides teaching guidelines and student material for a unit intended for use in high school business, consumer, or home economics programs. Time allotment is from four to six hours of classroom time. The objective of this capsule is to help students determine the financial institution that would best meet their needs. The student material focuses on five factors to consider when choosing a financial institution: convenience, interest paid on savings, service charges, safety of deposits, and interest charged on loans. Ten learning activities emphasize comparing various kinds of financial institutions through working mathematical problems, collecting newspaper ads, interpreting charts, answering questions, summarizing magazine articles, and playing a simulation game. Five supplementary activities include categorizing local banks, creating a comic strip, planning a bulletin board, and doing research. It is recommended that the unit follow another unit developed by Project Consumer Operations Survival Training (COST): Financial Institutions Investigated (SO 012 749). The teacher's guide provides advance preparation information, keys to activities and tests, a bibliography, and copies of all worksheets and assessments. (CK) |
