Abstract | The document presents objectives, teaching methods, activities, and work sheets for a unit on choosing breakfast cereal. The unit is intended to be used as an integral part of the fifth grade health program. Activities take place in a classroom learning center and can be completed in approximately four to six hours of classroom time. Objectives are to help students recognize the nutritional value of cereals, read labels on packages, and determine actual cost per serving of different cereals. Students are involved in a variety of activities including participating in scavenger hunts to find cereals with specific qualities (most expensive, least expensive, most preservatives, best flavor, etc.), playing word games, filling in handouts, answering questions, analyzing cartoons, making nutritional information posters, creating collages and bulletin boards, and making granola. Information presented in the teacher's guide for each activity includes materials needed, resources, objectives, solutions to potential difficulties, test questions, answer keys, and evaluation criteria.
