| Abstract | Developed by teachers for use in secondary reading classes, this individualized unit of study will teach students how to complete an income tax return. Specifically the students will learn to identify the purpose of a W-4 form, calculate their yearly withholding taxes, and complete a 1041 tax form. It is recommended that the student use four to six hours of instructional time to complete the unit. The Teacher's Guide contains instructions for implementing the unit, pre- and posttests, and copies of all student worksheets. The student booklet contains brief background readings and step-by-step directions which the student must follow to complete the unit. Using the background information provided in the student booklet, students are asked to complete worksheets. Students solve story problems, calculate the social security tax of several sample salaries, analyze and use tax tables, and fill in a sample W-4 form. Most of the activities are self-contained. However, to complete one of the activities, students will need copies of the booklet "Understanding Taxes" which is available free from the IRS. After reading this booklet, students are asked to list their deductions and write a paragraph telling how that answer was obtained. For another activity, teachers must purchase a film. (Author/RM) |
