| Abstract | Ancient teachings passed down to Mishomis by his Grandfather tell of Anishinabi (Original Man) who was placed on the earth by the Creator and told to walk the Earth and name all that he saw around him. He did so, and as he travelled he observed the seasons and the cycle of life. He learned what was good to eat and all the ways plants could be used. There was not one plant, animal, or place that was not touched by him. Yet he was lonely, so the Creator sent Ma-en-gan (Wolf) to be his companion and directed that the two travel the Earth together and visit all places. As they came to know all the earth, they also became like brothers. When their travels were finished, they met with the Creator, who then directed that it was time for each to go his separate way, adding that, "What shall happen to one of you will also happen to the other. Each of you will be feared, respected, and misunderstood by the people that will later join you on the earth." Ma-en-gan and Original Man set off on their separate journeys, but they remained much the same in many ways--they both mate for life, have a clan system, and a tribe. Both have had their land taken from them, been hunted for their hair, and been pushed to the brink of destruction. The story suggests that just as the wolf is beginning to come back to this land, perhaps the Indian people are also coming back to their original strength. The book includes an Ojibway vocabulary, fill-in-the-blank exercises, study questions, and definitions of key words. (DS) |
