Abstract | More than 7,000 adults were interviewed to determine attitudes Americans have toward their urban areas and to assess the quality of life in the United States. This volume presents a compilation of data gathered through the interviews. The volume is organized into five sections. Section A provides information related to community satisfaction, attributes of kinds and sizes of communities, assessments of past American urban life, and projections of future community characteristics. Information on what Americans see as the specific problem affecting their communities and how they evaluate the severity of those problems is provided in Section B. The frequency with which neighbors interact and preferences for neighborhood composition are focused on in Section C. Section D contains data concerning public use of facilities, work location, and commuting patterns. Section E describes Americans' evaluations of public services and governmental involvement with those services. Section F gives data on preferences about place of residence and housing type. Section G describes changing community trends and their impact on residential preferences. (Author/MK) |
