Abstract | In search of a method to increase the power of the educational experience for integrating student experience, many scholars have turned to the idea of interdisciplinarity. Apart from philosophical questions of values and epistemology there are operational problems of some significance. To meet them many advocates have proposed modifications in the organizational structure of colleges and universities. The thesis developed here is that modifications in the academic program, the curriculum, are more appropriate. In this way, it is proposed that most of the benefits can be obtained with minimal competition or confrontation in the organization. However, the design approach to curriculum modification is seen as essential. In this approach, curriculum is analyzed in terms of three main elements: content, context, and form. Examples are given of institutional efforts at curriculum change that have used one or more of the elements of the design approach. References are provided. (Author/MSE) |
