AbstractThe aim of this study was to establish from blacks themselves (the term "blacks" is used throughout the report as a collective for Asians, West Indians and Africans) answers to the following questions: why they left their country of origin, why they settled where they did, what were their expectations, what were and are their chances for employment and housing, what is their relationship with authority, to what extent do they participate in local activities, how do parents and youth relate, what are the problems facing black youth, how do they feel about the future, and what is their relationship with and opinions about local community relations councils. To gather information, 1,200 people were interviewed personally or via questionaire in three predominantly black areas in Great Britain. Findings are reported in tables of data and in the form of quotations from interview respondents. The data suggest the presence of two subcultural systems: black and white. The data also indicate that, relatively speaking, black people, especially the older ones, are less future oriented than white people and tend not to trust people they meet. (MK)
