AbstractThe evaluation of the effectiveness of the classes for persons convicted of driving while intoxicated was based largely on analyses of verbal behaviors of participants and instructors, using the psychosocial theories of Erik Erikson. The established goals of the course emphasize that the information must be dealt with in a group situation where facts, ideas, feelings, and perceptions can be mulled over in give-and-take interactions. Ten representative classes were selected for this study. Separate chapters cover teacher roles, participant-instructor verbal interaction and adaptive behavior, teaching style and the resolution of group conflict, developmental phases of successive class sessions, and instructional work and emotional response. Each chapter has a section explaining the theoretical framework, the methodology, the findings, and their interpretation. The final chapter presents the conclusions that in general the instructors were not sufficiently effective in bringing about the emotional involvement of the participants that would have been required to bring about effective attitude and behavior changes. Recommendations are made for improving the program. (Author/CTM)
