| Abstract | Covering the period from the beginnings of Fisk University through World War II, this narrative reviews the social and academic history of the institution. The problems of private universities, compounded by being black, are highlighted as are several events such as the student revolts of 1924-25, the appointment of the university's first black president, and the various socio-economic realities that impacted upon Fisk University's development. Chapters include: Laying the Foundation; From School to College; the Jubilee Singers; Era of Construction and Definition: 1875-1900; Head or Hand; Growth With McKenzie; The Student Revolt; A New Era; The Good Years; Depression and World War; Fisk as a Center of Scholarship and Culture; The Extracurriculum; and Alumni.
