Abstract | An Adult Basic Education curriculum utilizing community resources to help second language learners cope in real life situations is described. Curriculum topics lasting two to four weeks are studied through the use of speakers, films, real-life materials and field trips. Individual lessons cover: (1) community services, (2) consumer education, (3) cultural awareness, (4) employment, (5) family life, (6) government/citizenship, (7) law, (8) health, and (9) recreation. Life skills, vocabulary, and grammar are taught at each level through role playing, dialogues, conversations, and other oral, reading, and writing activities. An extensive list of possible speakers, trips, films, real-life materials, suggested classroom activities, textbooks, and other resources is included for each topic. (PMJ) |
